Federal division in Nigeria started with the creation of 12 ethnic states in 1967 after ethnic tensions which later degenerated into a civil war marred with violence and ugly bloodshed. Nigeria had a first taste of an attempt of secession between 1967 and 1970 i.e. the period of the Biafra war. This gave way to further crisis and it was the primary reason for 7 more ethnic states being added in 1975 totaling the number to 19 states. 2 more states were added immediately that brought the total to 21.The clamour and conflict went on with more ethnic and sub groups demanding for separate states, so in 1987 the number of states was increased to 30. Ethnic violence and more conflict forced the administration to bring the overall number of states to 36.
